Shop Local PEI: Protecting Jobs and Strengthening our Economy
Why This Campaign Matters
Prince Edward Island’s local economy is at a crossroads. The fact is, we are heavily reliant on $1.8 billion in annual exports to the United States, making us vulnerable to external shocks like looming tariffs. U.S. imposed tariffs will have serious consequences not just for the Island’s 249 local exporters and their over 8,000 employees, but for all business in the province. However, one positive from this climate of uncertainty is that we’re witnessing in real time that Islanders, and Canadians, are already rethinking their spending habits.
Changing consumer behaviour may seem miniscule on an individual basis but collectively spending habits have a BIG impact. Every Islander has the purchasing power to make a difference. By choosing to shop in locally run stores-whether it's a small independent business, a franchise, or a chain-Islanders can contribute to the livelihoods of their neighbours. The staff, and in most cases the owners, of these businesses are Islanders. They live here. They pay taxes. They shop local too.
Every dollar spent at a PEI-based business contributes to our local economy, which in turn funds vital services like healthcare, education, and infrastructure that benefit all Islanders. By shopping local, you’re not just supporting a business-you’re safeguarding local jobs and the economic future of our province.
The Power of Every Purchase
When shopping locally, prioritize local and Canadian-made products whenever possible. These purchases help keep money circulating in our economy, protecting jobs and reinforcing our economic stability. Businesses, too, are making the shift to offer more local products, but it takes time to source and stock these items. In the meantime, there's plenty of inventory that needs to be moved, so supporting local businesses, even when items aren't made here, still plays a crucial role in keeping our economy strong.

Three Questions to Ask Before You Buy Anything
Can I buy it here in PEI?
Supporting local businesses helps maintain jobs and strengthens our communities.
Is it an Island-produced product?
Choosing products grown, crafted, or manufactured in PEI directly supports our local farmers, fishers, artisans, and manufacturers.
Can I buy a Canadian version of this product?
If a local option isn’t available, purchasing Canadian-made goods helps keep wealth within the country.
HOW CAN I TELL?
While shopping local, check product labels for Product of Canada and Made in Canada.
Product of Canada: all or virtually all (at least 98%) of the total direct costs of producing or manufacturing the good have been incurred in Canada.
Made in Canada: at least 51% of the total direct costs of producing or manufacturing the good have been incurred in Canada.
Join the Movement
We all have a role to play in protecting local jobs and keeping our economy strong. Whether you’re a consumer, business owner, or community leader, increasing the percent you spend with locally run businesses, in person or online, makes a real and impactful difference. Historically, in times of crisis or need, Islanders have always shown up for each other. Every. Single. Time.
It’s time again.
